Apple mulled wine – non-alcoholic or with white wine

The recipe for this mulled wine extract is pretty straightforward. When it’s finished, you can choose whether to use it to serve an alcohol-free mulled wine, then you make it with only apple juice, or you want to serve it with rum and white wine, so you get a white mulled wine with alcohol.

Mulled wine without alcohol is an advantage if there are children who want taste or adults who need to drive home. Then it is okay to grab a refill.

This mulled wine is sweet and delicious and can be served traditionally with almonds and raisins, or like it is here, decorated with star anise and cinnamon sticks. It gives the most beautiful Christmas scent of licorice and cinnamon.

How to make apple mulled wine?

The first thing to do is to cook the mulled wine extract. For that you will need:

  • Apple juice
  • Cane sugar
  • Lemons
  • Orange
  • Cardamom capsules
  • Vanilla
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Star anise
  • Cloves
  • Peppercorns
  • Ginger

Everything goes into a large saucepan and cook for an hour under a lid. Once the extract is cooked, pour it into a glass together with all the spices, and then it should sit for 24 hours before you can use it to mix the finished mulled wine. After 24 hours, sieve the spices away, and it’s ready to serve.

Mulled White Wine

If you want to make a Mulled white wine, heat the white wine in a pan until just below the boiling point. Calculate approximately 2 dl of white wine per person. The hot white wine is mixed with 1 dl of mulled wine extract per person, and 1 cl of rum per person, if any. The rum you can omit if you want a milder mulled wine. Add either almonds and raisins, or star anise and cinnamon, and serve the mulled wine.
